When a “Raw Spot” is Rubbed

Understanding Sudden Escalation in Your Marriage

It happens in a flash. You are having a completely normal, everyday conversation about schedules, chores, or weekend plans. The tone is calm, and the stakes feel low.

Then, a single sentence is spoken, and the entire room shifts.

Suddenly, the conversation becomes incredibly heightened. One partner is completely flooded with emotion—perhaps snapping in anger or withdrawing in tears. The other partner sits there entirely bewildered, with absolutely no idea what they just said that caused such a massive, painful impact.

If this rhythm feels familiar, you aren’t failing at communication. Chances are, a "raw spot" has just been rubbed.

What is a Raw Spot?

In relationship therapy, we often look at these sudden, high-intensity reactions as clues to our past. A raw spot is an emotional childhood wound that has not fully scarred over. It is a place where you were hurt, neglected, or left feeling unsafe when you were young.

While the original event is long over, the emotional sensitivity remains. When your spouse accidentally steps on that specific spot, your nervous system doesn't register a minor modern oversight; it registers the historic pain of the original wound.

The Anatomy of an Escalation

To understand how this plays out in real life, let’s look at a common scenario.

Imagine a couple planning their evening. One partner says, “You were late to pick me up from the train station.”

Objectively, it’s a statement of fact. But instantly, the entire dynamic of the conversation flips. The partner who was waiting becomes deeply tearful or intensely angry.

The other spouse, feeling unfairly attacked, immediately responds defensively: “I was only five minutes late because there was terrible traffic!”

From the outside, it looks like an argument about five minutes of traffic. But beneath the surface, a deep childhood wound has just been ripped open.

When that partner was left waiting at the station, they weren't just a grown adult waiting on a spouse. They were suddenly a child again—the very last kid standing on the school kerb, waiting for a parent who forgot them, experiencing the exact shame and abandonment they used to get bullied for.

The spouse had absolutely no intention of causing pain. They didn't realise that a simple delay would touch a reservoir of childhood grief. Yet, the loop is locked: one partner feels abandoned, the other feels blamed, and both end up disconnected.

Moving Beyond the Surface Argument

When these raw spots are triggered, couples usually get trapped arguing about the surface details. They debate the logistics of the traffic, the exact number of minutes, or the tone of voice used.

But you cannot fix an emotional childhood wound with logical, logistical arguments.

To break this cycle, couples need to step out of the courtroom and into a space of curiosity.

Instead of asking "Why are you overreacting to five minutes?" the question becomes "What did that five-minute delay mean to you?"

Unpacking the Raw Spots Together

Learning to navigate these moments requires a safe, predictable environment. It takes time to slow down our automatic defences, look beneath the anger or the tears, and identify what the raw spot actually is.

Therapy offers a protected sanctuary to do exactly this work. By utilising research-backed frameworks like Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and Imago Relationship Therapy, we can safely unpack these raw spots.

Instead of allowing your childhood wounds to dictate your current marital conflicts, counselling helps you map these triggers. When you both understand where the landmines are buried, you can stop stepping on them—and start helping each other heal them.
